Apparently wanting to capitalize on the success of Nier: Automata, Square Enix has authorized a Nier reprinting to bring the Playstation 3 game back to the gaming world.
Originally a fairly overlooked, niche title, Nier has since been vindicated by history and is looked on fondly for its story, if nothing else.
Nier Automata is a “direct” sequel to Nier. Nier itself takes place in the aftermath of the Drakengard series, specifically after the game’s Ending E.
The protagonists of Drakengard fly into the human world and are shot down by a jet, causing a poisonous black substance to float down onto Earth and begin a plague.
The game focuses on a man that can be named by the player, who must find a cure for the plague after it begins to afflict his daughter Yona. Along the way they meet a colorful cast of characters, and become enveloped in a deep plot where not everything is as it seems.
The Nier reprinting is likely in response to the runaway success of Nier Automata, which was released several weeks ago and has already broken past a million sales.
While Nier itself is definitely something of a more fantasy game than Automata (the technology you come across is often broken, and the threat is more magical in nature than technological), it still manages to tell a deep narrative with plenty of twists and turns.
Unfortunately the Nier reprinting isn’t going to be on the Playstation 4. Instead it will be re-released on the Playstation 3, so if you still have a Playstation 3 lying around, but haven’t played Nier, this might be a good opportunity for you.
Either way, you can pre-order the Nier reprinting now on the official Square Enix website, though there’s no telling if the pre-order actually comes with anything. There’s no confirmed release date, either.
