With more and more hints of Assassin’s Creed: Empire (if that’s actually coming out) rising, a Ubisoft developer has denied the screenshot that got leaked, but has also talked about how much competition from The Legend of Zelda and Horizon Zero Dawn helps to make the Assassin’s Creed team work harder.
Assassin’s Creed: Empire’s setting of Ancient Egypt had first been guessed when an apparent leaked screenshot was released onto the internet. The developer in question, Ubisoft’s Head of Content for Assassin’s Creed Aymar Azaizia, denied that the screenshot was real in a Reddit “ask me anything” thread.
So, we may still not have any real information on whether Assassin’s Creed: Empire actually exists or not, but hopefully we’ll still be getting some information about it.
The possibility of an Assassin’s Creed game taking place in Ancient Egypt is an interesting idea, and one that would be pretty cool for players to go into.
However, Azaizia didn’t reveal any other details about what the game might be. Instead talking about the benefits of competition from great open-world games such as the two most recent examples, Horizon Zero Dawn and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Considering that both are open-world games with medieval or Bronze Age-esque settings, Assassin’s Creed: Empire joining them would run the risk of looking like a copycat.
Assassin’s Creed being built as a fairly large open-world game (even if the “open world” has, until recently, just been cities with small bits of countryside in between them) from the beginning, Ubisoft definitely has to step up its game to make whatever new Assassin’s Creed game is coming out in the future be good.
While we likely won’t see anything else about Assassin’s Creed until possibly E3 2017, we’ll likely just have to keep an eye out for more information on Assassin’s Creed in the near future.
