NRG Esports is the next major North American organization to mark its official presence in the competitive Overwatch arena.
Earlier today, the management confirmed that the roster practicing under its banner for the past couple of weeks has been signed full-time as its new Overwatch team.
The roster comprises Alex “Ajax” Johnson (former Team SoloMid), Anthony “Harbleu” Ballo (former compLexity Gaming), Brandon “Seagull” Larned (Captain and former Luminosity Gaming), Tim “Dummy” Olson (former Team Liquid), André “iddqd” Dahlström (former Fnatic), and Seb “Numlocked” Barton (former Team Dignitas).
“I am super excited to be playing with some of the biggest stars in Overwatch,” Ajax told Dot Esports in a statement. “I have a lot to live up to as an in game leader. I’ll be doing my best to constantly improve and I want to help give fans of NRG wins again.”
Despite fielding some of the best players in the market, NRG Esports began its Overwatch season on a low note. It recently placed fifth in the Major League Gaming (MLG) tournament, held in December in Las Vegas. The results were a wake-up call for the squad, which has since then been trying out new players.
Carl “enigma” Yangsheng, Yomar “milo” Toledo, and Matthew “CLOCKWORK” Dias were dropped from the team. Iddqd was brought in soon after, followed by Ajax and Harblue. According to the players, the new roster is looking better than before. At least, it is performing relatively well in scrims.
“We have been doing really well results wise [in scrims,]” said Ajax, “but I don’t think results in scrims matter. I’m more excited about how fast we are learning and improving together.”
There is no confirmation on whether NRG Esports will continue to invest more time in practicing, or if it has decided to enter the next major tournament. Hopefully, the squad will remain until Blizzard inaugurates the highly anticipated Overwatch League in the coming months.
