CD Projekt RED’s upcoming science-fiction game Cyberpunk 2077 may be more successful than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. While Cyberpunk 2077’s success might be more successful, the game is still a ways away from coming out (even though now CDPR has almost its whole team working on it.) But they have good reasons.
Cyberpunk 2077 is based off of the old roleplaying game 2020, in a similar vein to how the Witcher games were based off of the books that also starred Geralt of Rivia. Hotly anticipated since several years ago when the game’s reveal trailer was first released, anticipation for the game has been high now that CD Projekt RED can fully focus on it.
Cyberpunk 2077 will take place decades into the future, where cyborgs and gene therapy are running rampant in Earth’s decaying society. In the middle of an enormous cyberpunk city, players will take advantage of this future technology to uncover why cyborgs are suddenly going crazy.
CD Projekt RED has yet to show us any real gameplay of the game, but hopefully when they do Cyberpunk 2077’s success chances will become more relevant. CD Projekt RED has gotten a reputation as an amazing developer following the runaway success of the Witcher games, so hopefully they can make Cyberpunk 2077’s success just as big as The Witcher’s.
With the reputation gained by The Witcher, not to mention the experience gained from making all of the Witcher games that were increasing in scale and size, Cyberpunk 2077’s success may be assured. This is so long as CD Projekt RED can run on its own hype and the appeal of a change from the fantasy setting of The Witcher to the science fiction universe of Cyberpunk.
While Cyberpunk 2077 still doesn’t have a release date, hopefully when it comes out it will be just as good as the other Witcher games.
