Legend Of Zelda Breath Of The Wild launched earlier this month with great critical and financial success. However, many fans have raised concern over Link’s iconic hat missing in the latest installment, and now Nintendo has explained why is the hat missing.
Speaking with Polygon, Legend Of Zelda Breath Of The Wild Art Director, Satoru Takizawa, explained that the reason the iconic hat is missing is because it has become very difficult to make it look cool.
As the graphic fidelity has increased it becomes more difficult to make that hat look cool. As the game becomes more realistic it’s difficult to present it in a way that’s appealing. If you look at Twilight Princess, I really made the hat long, so it would flap in the wind and move around. But because of that people were like ‘What’s he got? What’s in that hat?’
Before the release of the game, many fans were upset over the lack of Link’s iconic green tunic and hat. According to Takumi Wada, leaving behind Link’s iconic green tunic and the triangular hat was a very difficult decision for the studio, but it was important to illustrate that Link will have different outfits in Legend Of Zelda Breath Of the Wild.
Not having Link’s iconic green clothes and triangular hat in the main illustration was a brave decision. But the concept that Link changes various clothes in this title was decided from the start, so this design first and foremost set about to show symbolically that ‘it is different every time’.
The Legend Of Zelda Breath Of The Wild is an open-world action adventure game developed by Nintendo for Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
