Report: Shenmue HD Remaster Launching In 2017

It has been a while since we heard anything related to Shenmue and specifically Shenmue 3 which is currently in development. Now a report suggests that Sega is planning to release the Shenmue HD remaster in 2017.

According to Ricedigital, a trusted source close to Atlus USA has told the site that Shenmue HD Remaster will be released this year. According to the report, Shenmue HD Remaster will include first 2 games in the series and will be released ahead of Shenmue 3, which itself might slip to 2018.

Shenmue HD Remaster releasing this year also makes sense since Sega has registered a domain under the name of  The domain suggests that Sega might be working on the HD remasters of Shenmue and Shenmue II. Also, back in May 2016, Sega was investigating about the Shenmue HD remasters.

With regards to Shenmue I and II HD, of course, we would love to release these tomorrow. Sadly, it’s not as simple as porting the games to current platforms as we will need to ensure that any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles. And with games as immersive as Shenmue I and II, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.

Shenmue III is in development at YS Net for PlayStation 4 and PC but no release date has been announced.
