Has-Been Heroes Interview: A Blend Of Turn Based Strategy, Real Time Mechanics

Has-Been Heroes is an upcoming action, strategy game that will be coming out for the Nintendo Switch soon after the launch of the hybrid gaming console. It will also be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The game is a side-scroller that provides a great blend of turn-based strategy and real-time mechanics.

Q: First, let’s talk about the lore of Has Been Heroes. Where is the game taking us, who are we playing as and what is our motivation?

Has-Been Heroes puts you in the role of a group of former legendary heroes, now retired and well past their prime. There’s only two guys left of the epic band – The warrior Crux and monk-mage Metacles. They’re met by a young fan, a rogue by the name of Tam, and together the three are given a quest by the king – to take his daughters to a faraway academy for studies.

Your goal is to safely make the trip to the far side of the world by defeating a ruthless onslaught of incoming monsters such as zombies, skeletons and evil spirits, all summoned by a dangerous adversary.

Q: It’s a unique game so I’m very interested in knowing about the inspiration behind developing such a title.

We went with a team-first approach for this game, there was a small team at Frozenbyte with a mindset for creating something a bit different from our usual games.  We made some designs and built a number of prototypes for a challenging roguelike game, and after a few tries we knew we had something good when the team was completely hooked on the mechanics.  We’ve been building on that ever since and are still having fun with the game!

Q: How was it like working with Nintendo Switch?

It’s been great!  We are launching Has-Been Heroes on March 28th so during the console’s launch month which is always exciting! Development has been smooth with little to no hiccups, everything with the Switch seems to have been very well thought out from a developer perspective.

Q: Since we are seeing the game on Switch, any chances of Has Been Heroes coming to other platforms such as PlayStation Vita, 3DS?

We don’t have any plans for additional platforms at this point besides PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

Q: Will “Has Been Heroes” receive a demo before launch?

Plans are still open, we’ll see.  At the very least, you should be able to play the demo at conventions like GDC and PAX East.
