A new Gwent faction is going to be making an appearance soon in CD Projekt RED’s online card game, which is currently in beta but will hopefully be releasing sometime this year. The new faction in question is Nilfgaard, the empire that is a constant threat in the game and books.
Nilfgaard resides in the south of the continent where the Witcher games and books take place. A massive empire that has repeatedly attempted to invade the Northern Kingdoms, Nilfgaard launches another war of conquest that can either succeed or fail, based on the player’s choices and actions throughout the story.
The new Gwent faction is only new when it comes to the standalone Gwent card game. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, where the game first appeared and immediately took off, Nilfgaard is one of the four different decks that players can choose, whether it’s the Northern Kingdoms, Nilfgaard, the Scoia’tael (the rebel guerrilla units of elves and dwarves that pop up in various areas in the game), or monsters, each group has a variety of different strategies and skill sets that they cater to. In Nilfgaard specifically, the deck relies on various spy units, allowing them to fill their hands with more cards and rearrange card orders in decks.
Nilfgaard will be joining Monsters, Scoia’tael, the Skellige Isles, and the Northern Kingdoms in the game, and will be adding over 60 cards to the game. Currently the game is in its beta stage, however, with every new Gwent faction added in the game gets more and more detailed.
The Nilfgaard update is supposed to be coming on February 6, next Monday, so if you’re already part of the beta and are playing the game, get ready to have the whole game tossed around by Nilfgaard’s arrival, as until the cards are balanced things will be a lot different than they were before.
