Gears of War 4 fans that have friend who play on both the Xbox One and the PC will be in luck soon, as Gears of War 4 cross platform multiplayer will soon become a thing for both the Xbox One and the PC when the multiplayer officially comes to both platforms.
It’s not going to be anything big, unfortunately; given the differences in reaction times and framerates between PC and console versions of games, having the games be cross-platform when it comes to ranked play would be unfair to the console users.
As such, the cross platform play is exclusive to unranked multiplayer play, so no abusing your status as a primarily PC player to get easy wins over console teams.
While according to Microsoft’s Windows 10 blog, the performance between both the console players and PC players was pretty close in parity, Liam Ashley, a developer from The Coalition, has said that they want to make sure that ranked experiences are as closely matched as possible; which means that in Ranked games, players are going to have to play against people that are also on PC, or also on Xbox Ones.
While Gears of War 4 is one of the games available on the Xbox One’s Play Anywhere program, which allows a number of different games to be played on both the Xbox One and the PC without any loss of progress between the two, that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be a perfect experience in multiplayer.
While the Gears of War 4 cross platform multiplayer is only for unranked play, it’s a better solution than putting in ranked play and then having people complain that it’s not fair that PC players or console players have the advantage during a match. This way, both sides can play with one another with nothing on the line.
