Sega has been talking about the Shenmue franchise for quite some time and with Shenmue III in development fans of the franchise have a reason to be excited. It seems that Sega is considering Shenmue HD remasters as the company has registered a domain under the name of ShenmueHD.com.
The domain suggests that Sega might be working on the HD remasters of Shenmue and Shenmue II. Also, back in May 2016, Sega was investigating about the Shenmue HD remasters.
With regards to Shenmue I and II HD, of course, we would love to release these tomorrow. Sadly, it’s not as simple as porting the games to current platforms as we will need to ensure that any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles. And with games as immersive as Shenmue I and II, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.
While Shenmue III is in development it does not come as a surprise that Sega has made up its mind for the HD remasters of the first two entries in the franchise.
Back in December 2016, Sega revealed that Shenmue III will be entering full production soon and also released some screenshots for the game. Also, series creator Yu Suzuki revealed that the team might be able to showcase some gameplay videos in early 2017 and the pre-orders for the PC version of the game are live.
Shenmue III is in development at YS Net for PlayStation 4 and PC but no release date has been announced.
