Blizzard has fulfilled its promise to release the new Overwatch Oasis map in early 2017. The free content update is now live for both PC and consoles.
Oasis is the fourth Control (King of the Hill) map of the popular team-based shooter, following Ilios, Lijiang Tower and Nepal. It is split into three separate portions, each with its own capture point: Garden, City Center, and University.
“Researchers and academics from around the region came together to found a city dedicated to scientific progress without restraints—a monument to human ingenuity and invention,” reads the official description. “The city and its inhabitants are governed by the Ministries, a collection of brilliant minds who possess many secrets that have attracted the interest of powerful organizations from around the world.”
The map is set in the game’s Arabian desert, a place previously thought to be uninhabitable. However, research and hard work paved the way to scientific breakthroughs that made the harsh place a haven for everyone.
Every corner of the magnificent city indicates access to an abundance of resources and advanced technology. The new Overwatch Oasis map introduces jump pads to the game, a very first for the player-base and something Blizzard is keenly following. Should the new game element be successful, we might see it being featured in other maps as well.
Additionally, the map also features several environmental hazards that players must be aware of. You can choose to stay away or take advantage of key junctions to trap enemy players. Make sure to watch out for flying cars.
The esports crowd has been very welcoming towards Oasis. Many are referring to it as the new Ilios, meaning that we will possibly see it as a new favorite pick by professional teams in this year’s tournaments.
