Mafia 3 launched last month with a lukewarm reception from critics and gamers alike, partly due to amount of bugs and glitches in the game, and the repetitiveness of the game. However, not having good reviews does not guarantee that sales will not be good, as there was quite some hype following the game’s launch.
2K’s parent company, Take Two Interactive, revealed during its earnings call that Mafia 3 is the fastest selling game in the history of 2K Games. Not only this, the Mafia 3 surpassed the game franchises such as NBA 2K, Borderlands and Bioshock franchise.
According to the company, Mafia 3 sold and shipped more than 4.5 million units in digital and retail for its first week.
However, it is somewhat surprising that the game got some less than stellar reviews and currently stands on 62 percent on Metacritic. But the reason for the game to become the fastest selling game in the 2K Game’s history might be because of the hype for game before launch.
Also 2K did not send any reviews copies for the game before the release of Mafia 3, which could also contribute to the boost in sales as the reviews came a cuple of days after the game’s launch and many had bought the game at launch or pre-ordered it before launch.
While Mafia 3 got everage reviews from critics, according to ex-2K employee its because of the meddling of 2K and the bad decisions that company makes. According to the ex-employee, 2K Games has a big history of bad decisions which not only ends up resulting in unsuccessful IPs but also causes numerous job losses.
