Not coming as a surprise to anyone, this year’s FIFA has once again passed PES in sales numbers. EA’s football game, FIFA 17 is currently at #1 in UK game sales chart while PES 17 is at #6.
Despite receiving critical acclaim across the board, Konami’s PES 2017 failed to outsell not only FIFA 17, but also pulled in a small sub-50k figure of units sold.
A big reason for this low number of sales is undoubtedly the lack of some of the biggest teams and players in the game due to licensing issues. Despite many considering PES 2017 as a better football game than FIFA 17, the lack of those players and teams which prevent fans from creating their own ultimate teams definitely puts many off from purchasing PES 2017.
FIFA 17, despite having just launched a week ago, has managed to sell more than 1.1 million copies in the UK which is 40 times more than what PES 2017 did. The latest iteration of the FIFA franchise also managed to break first week sales record of the franchise.
There are many predictions that this new installment will even managed to out-sell FIFA 13, currently the highest sold FIFA game, sitting at over 14.5 million copies sold.
UK, being pretty much the home of football will undoubtedly have a massive number of football game sales but even after factoring in the global sales, it is impossible for PES 2017 to even come close to the sales figure of EA’s franchise.
Given Konami’s recent shift towards mobile gaming, could it be possible that the publisher ends up shifting the PES franchise to mobile platforms and leave the console market an open field for EA?
FIFA 17 and PES 2017 are both available on PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. FIFA 17 also marks the shift of the franchise from the Ignite Engine to the Frostbite 3 Engine.
