With Gears of War 4 coming out in just around two weeks, The Coalition has decided to show off the first 20 minutes of the game through the Gears of War 4 prologue, which puts you in the shoes of several different Gears as you’re taken through notable moments in the game’s backstory.
Framed with a speech by the leader of the new Coalition of Ordered Governments, First Minister Jinn, players are taken through the last days of the Pendulum Wars at Aspho Fields (where Marcus Fenix earned a reputation as a war hero) a small piece of Emergence Day (when the Locust first attacked the surface), and finally the end of the war at Anvil Gate (seen in Gears of War 3).
All of the prologue gameplay shows us how good the new game looks, particularly since its upgrade to Unreal Engine 4.
With that new engine now available, the Gears of War 4 prologue has shown off a great deal of the beautiful environments that we can expect to see when the game releases on Xbox One and PC.
We also get to see a more expanded view of the world of Sera than the bombed-out wastelands that were endlessly trudged through in the original games, seeing burning forests outside Anvil Gate as Locust endlessly storm towards the wall, watching planes fly over Aspho Fields as anti-aircraft fire streaks into the sky, and watching a COG city be torn to pieces by the Locust.
We even get to see how good the series’s gore looks now when a Corpser is popped like a zit by the Hammer of Dawn, spraying blood and bits everywhere.
Gears of War 4 will be coming out on Xbox One and PC on October 11, around two weeks from now. Regardless of which version you’ll end up owning, you can also switch between both versions with the Xbox One’s Play Anywhere program.
