It can sound kinda awkward since this game is set in a futuristic past, but this is exactly the path Guerrilla wanted to follow. This choice was discussed by the lead writer John Gonzalez during an interview with Game Informer.
“Our approach when writing the dialogue of the game was actually to make it as accessible as possible. We really wanted to avoid having our characters speak languages like high elvish. in the sense that everyone has this very ornate way of speaking. That’s something you’ll see in the dialogue of the trailers. Aloy almost speaks like a 21st century American. That’s purely intentional”.
“With so much time having passed in the game, English could have changed into some other language. But we wanted players to project their imaginations into the world of Horizon Zero Dawn without any kind of barriers or misunderstanding. Basically English is the main characters that is being spoken in this game”.
It seems it will be very easy to understand the dialogues if you speak English.
Recently, Gonzalez also spoke about the main plot. In his opinion, even people who don’t love to follow the story will be able to enjoy this game, since it will contain a lot of features.
