Titanfall released on Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC a couple of years ago. It is the best selling new IP from EA. According to Respawn Entertainment, the game has sold around 11 million units to date.
Speaking with PlayStation Lifestyle, Chief Operating Officer Dusty Welch said:
EA released at some point, 7.5 million. I think we’re at almost 11 million unique players. For a single platform early on in the hardware cycle, that’s extraordinary.
What I’ve heard from EA is that it’s their best-selling new IP ever. So I think back to my early days with all of the Call of Duty games, you know, Titanfall 1…well ahead of the sales curve of Call of Duty. The attach rate was much higher.
Respawn is now working on Titanfall 2 that is going to be a multiplatform game, releasing on PlayStation 4 as well. PlayStation 4 has over 40 million units in the market right now so expect Titanfall 2 to be an even bigger hit.
You may wonder why Respawn never released the first game for PlayStation 4. In the same interview, the developer revealed that the decision was never in their hands.
The studio wanted the game to be on PlayStation 4 but EA went ahead and partnered with Microsoft.
That decision is one that was out of our hands — the EA decision with Microsoft. We would always like these to be multiplatform. The more consumers that can play ’em, the better. It’s not about money, it’s about the audience base, which is important.
The good news is that the second game is much more refined experience and it is heading to PlayStation.
