Fans of Star Trek will soon be able to fly around the galaxy in their own starship, because the Star Trek Online release date has finally been revealed by Sony. The game is already available on the Xbox, and on Playstation 4, at least, September 9 (meaning this Friday) is when the game is supposed to come out.
Star Trek remains one of the quintessential science fiction series that many geeks go on, whether feuding with Star Wars fans or playing its games and watching its shows (all of which are now on Netflix). Star Trek: Beyond, the most recent entry into the JJ Abrams alternate reality universe, also came out several months ago during the summer.
Upon the Stark Trek Online release date coming, players will be able to take on the role of one of a captain in one of the Star Trek universe’s three main factions: the United Federation of Planets, the Romulan Empire, or the Klingon Empire, with all of the abilities that those would entail.
Previously, Star Trek Online had only been available on PC from 2010, but now the game’s publisher Perfect Worlds are moving it over to consoles, with controller support, a new user interface specifically for console users, and other things such as a more atmospheric lighting system. The game is also free-to-play, so you don’t have to worry about a subscription either.
This marks the newest of the free-to-play MMORPGs that have come onto consoles, alongside Neverwinter, The Elder Scrolls Online, and games like Defiance, Destiny (though that’s not really an MMO, according to Bungie) and more.
So, if you’re a fan of Star Trek and have been waiting for a good Star Trek game to come out on consoles, then soon you’ll be able to explore the final frontier on your own terms in your own five-year mission (or however long you want to play) when the Star Trek Online release date rolls around for Playstation 4 at the end of this week.
