It is a universal fact that everything we create has some inspiration behind it. While the inspiration behind Gears of War 4 is the original Gears Of War, it seems that some ideas that went unused in the first game have also inspired some features in Gears of War 4.
Speaking with IGN, The Coalition Studio Director, Rod Fergusson, revealed that when he first joined Epic Games the first idea he had for Gears Of War co-op was that to give players choice to pick genders of the co-op partner.
When I first joined Epic, one of my first ideas I had for Cliff [Bleszinksi] was ‘Hey, how about we get to pick the gender of your co-op player’. So there’s Dominic and Dominique and you get to pick whether you want to play as male or female. Cliff laughed at me and we never did it.
He further added that if they had gone with this idea than there could have been a lot of difficulties in technical point of view and would have robbed fans from Dom’s stroy with his wife.
We would have had to write so much branching dialog, and we basically would have [had] to create two stories. Gears 1 was a trial by fire, and so to create one more scope by saying let’s double the amount of dialog we need to have…it’s not a free choice.
However, Fergusson is bringing his idea to fruition in the upcoming Gears OF War 4 with Kait Diaz.
What we decided to do, now that Cliff’s not here to veto me, let’s still look at having that ability for the co-op player to have that choice, whether they want to play as male or female. But, instead of having it be different sexes of the same character, just have it be from two different perspectives. So, Dell or Kate. And so, I like that idea of being like, you decide who you want to be as you’re going along on JD’s journey.
Gears Of War 4 is set to launch on October 11, 2016 for PC and Xbox One.
