Back when Wii U was announced, EA took to stage to confirm a partnership with Nintendo that will see many projects released for the platform. However, as soon as EA saw Wii U’s imminent failure, the company jumped ship and dropped support entirely.
Same was done by Ubisoft and other big name publishers and developers. You can not see them as the bad guys as Wii U just didn’t have enough units out in the wild.
Now with the coming release of Nintendo NX, many publishers are optimistic about Nintendo future in the console space. In fact, publishers are willing to support Nintendo NX and once again partner with Nintendo. EA is one of these companies but according to Vice President, Patrick Soderlund, if NX has an addressable market they will be there but they can’t comment on it just yet.
Nintendo is such an instrumental part of our whole industry. They deserve to be successful, and they deserve to be a major player in the business, given their pedigree.
It’s not only the machines that they’ve built, but also the IPs they’ve brought to market. There are very few companies like Nintendo. Whenever they bring something to market that we see an addressable market for, we’ll be there. Given that they haven’t announced [a new console] officially or shown it, I can’t comment specifically.
Nintendo previously said that it wants to introduce its machine to a wider audience. We think the only way for them to do that is get third party support.
