Sony has announced that the beta for PlayStation 4’s upcoming 4.0 update, codenamed “Shingen” will start tomorrow August 16. The PS4 Firmware 4.0 beta will be available for everyone who is included in public beta program.
Those who have signed up for PS4 Firmware 4.0 beta and are selected, will be notified through an e-mail along with instructions about how to download the beta firmware.
Sony has also detailed “the new features of this system software update. 4.0 will allow you to personalize your PS4 experience and enjoy a more streamlined interface with new ways to connect and share – we’re refreshing the system UI, adding Folders, updating the Quick Menu, and much more”.
The PS4 Firmware 4.0 beta will bring a lot ofe improvements to the main UI of the console. According to Sony:
That includes a range of changes, like revised pop-up notifications, updated system icons and new system backgrounds to choose from. As a whole, it all adds up to a more refined and easy to use UI.
Sony has overhauled the Quick Menu to make it faster and easier to use. One big change to the Quick Menu is that it only covers a portion of the screen, which means players would not need to leave the game entirely.
Quick Menu can also be customized to add shortcuts for the features you want immediate access to.
Sony has also given a similar overhaul to the Share Menu, which appears once the share button on Dualshock 4 is pressed.
Like the Quick Menu, it only covers a portion of the screen. It will save the last social network you shared video clips or screenshots to and allow you to share screenshots directly to a Community wall, making the process of sharing a screenshot or video a bit faster and more streamlined.
Folders and Library Organisation
The PS4 Firmware 4.0 beta brings some much requested changes to Folders and Library Organization. The update adds the functionality to create folders on PS4’s content launcher and library. Also the update brings big changes to the Library too.
The update adds a new tab in Library called Purchased Content. This new tab will only show those items that are owned by a player, and the main library will only show what is installed on PS4.
With PS4 Firmware 4.0 beta, players will be able to view the trophies offline. Players will be able to see new “Offline Mode” when the system is unable to connect to a network. According to Sony:
We’ve also added a button that will let you reveal the content of a Hidden Trophy. The trophy will still be hidden by default, but you can now choose to show the trophy name and info.
With PS4 Firmware 4.0 beta the look of the User Profile have been updated. This will make it easier to see relevant info for a player at-a-glance. Users will also be able to add a background image to their own profile. The background can be selected from the screenshots the user has taken from its games.
PS4 Firmware 4.0 will have more features, but those will not be included in beta. Sony has announced that in coming weeks more info on 4.00 update, including its launch date will be revealed.
