A new Gears of War 4 gameplay video has taken “Gears” more literally than most, considering that we’re facing robots. Yes, you read that correctly: robots. The video, which also shows us JD Fenix and his squad interacting with dear old Marcus Fenix, fighting off an attack by robotic enemies called “Deebees” in what appears to be Marcus’s house.
It’s certainly quite the swerve from the original game, where the Locust and variants of the Locust were the only enemies that you had to use, but it will likely be pretty refreshing as well, especially if it keeps players off balance. However, we don’t know who owns the Deebees or why they would be attacking Marcus.
If you want my opinion, it may be the result of a conspiracy against Marcus, especially since the robots are deployed from what might be a COG cargo plane.
Either way the Deebees show off a fairly good amount of dangerous tactics: they have multiple enemy types, ranging from light types to more durable heavy types to flying types that possess an energy shield and a chaingun. The heavy types will apparently also charge at you when critically damaged and try to explode, taking you with them.
Two other things seen in the Gears of War 4 gameplay video are a variety of new weapons (most of them owned by the DeeBees) and Marcus Fenix himself. Far from being sidelined in favor of the new protagonists, Marcus accompanies JD and his squad through the Fenix estate.
The various robot weapons also look fairly promising, ranging from the TriShot chain gun to the Overkill shotgun, and even to a submachine gun, a new addition to the Gears of War arsenal that had normally focused around heavier weapons.
We don’t really learn much story from the Gears of War 4 gameplay video, but at least we don’t have very long to wait before Gears of War 4 comes out in late October.
