Final Fantasy 13, the first entry in what many call “Lightning Trilogy”, will get a remastered version on the Xbox One. This is all according to a rumor based on a leaked listing that was spotted on Xbox.com. There’s no information if the other two games in the trilogy are going to be included in the remastering, or when the game will come out.
Final Fantasy 13 was the start of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy series, which takes place in the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy and the Final Fantasy Type-0 game. In the FNC setting, various beings known as “fal’Cie” serve as gods, or extremely powerful individuals granted power by crystals. There are also regular l’Cie, who are humans that are given duties that they must perform, or turn into a mindless beast.
Final Fantasy 13 is somewhat divisive among the Final Fantasy fanbase, mainly due to its protagonist, Lightning. While she seems like a female version of Cloud at first, many players found her boring, unlikable, and reacted with derision at her getting a trilogy of her own games (supposedly due to Kazushige Nojima, the creator of the setting, loving her character).
The series does have its fans, however, and considering the resurgence Final Fantasy is undergoing Microsoft may have commissioned a remaster of the game to get in on the potential profits. Remakes of both Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 12 are both in the works, and Final Fantasy 15 is supposed to be released at the end of September this year.
Whether Final Fantasy 13 will be able to make as much money as the Final Fantasy 7 and 12 remakes will, not to mention Final Fantasy 15, remains to be seen, however. Final Fantasy 15 will at least help to augment its profits, considering that it’s part of the still-new effort to get Final Fantasy off of a Playstation exclusive and onto multiple consoles.
