No need to relate this to how video games promote violence in the community, because you cannot draw that line in this case. An 18 year old girl from Georgia, named Kayla Dixon has pleaded guilty of killing a man in an attempted robbery, where the only thing being robbed was a used PlayStation 4!
That does sound absurd, but then again, it is the world we live in. With gun violence reaching new heights and people still giving the boot to gun control legislations, a Craigslist ad for a $280 gaming console is one of the many things that have the potential to lead to a murder.
Any how, what happened was that Dixon and her boyfriend Nathaniel Vivien decided to call up the seller on Craigslist, named Danny Zeitz in 2014 with a plan to rob him – at that time her age was 16.
When Vivien tried to snatch the console from Zeitz, who had brought it to show and potentially sell it to the couple, Danny Zeitz resisted and tried to get hold of his console. As a result, Dixon shot the guy with a .25 caliber handgun.
All this happened while Kayla Dixon had her one year old child strapped to the backseat of her car! She does feel ashamed of what she did and says she would give anything to undo what has been done:
I would trade anything, almost anything, to bring Daniel back. But I know I can’t. I know he had plans. I wish I could tell him I’m so, so sorry that this happened, but I can’t.
She pleaded guilty on the day her trial was to start and has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.
According to the details of the case, Kayla Dixon has had a very troubled childhood with rape, drugs and crimes all around her. This has had an effect on her. The PlayStation 4 was just a product that she and her boyfriend wanted to rob from Danny Zeitz and sell.
