Mei mostly contributes assist kills rather than direct kills of her own. She is there to support her teammates win the match by creating hurdles, obstacles, and protective shields.
Mei Strengths and Weaknesses
The biggest drawback of Mei is that she is vulnerable to long range characters and if her allies aren’t there to protect her, she won’t be able to survive for too long. However, her allies can win countless matches by protecting her from enemies while she does her job, which makes her an integral part of the team.
Mei is excellent at disrupting enemy team and can not only slow them down but is able to freeze them solid; making them easy targets. Her Ultimate ability can do some devastating damage, contributing multiple kills.
Due to damage drop off though, Mei has Low damage at medium and long range in Overwatch. Moreover, freezing characters with great mobility like Lucio, Tracer, Soldier 76 etc can prove to be very difficult.
Mei Abilities and Ability Tips
This section of the guide provides an overview of all the abilities and ultimate ability at Mei’s disposal and how to effectively use these abilities in order to have more successful games.
Mei’s blaster unleashes a concentrated, short-range stream of frost that damages, slows, and ultimately freezes enemies in place. Mei can also use her blaster to shoot icicle-like projectiles at medium range.
Mei instantly surrounds herself with a block of thick ice. She heals and ignores damage while encased, but cannot move or use abilities.
Mei generates an enormous ice wall that obstructs lines of sight, stops movement, and blocks attacks.
Mei deploys a weather-modification drone that emits gusts of wind and snow in a wide area. Enemies caught in the blizzard are slowed and take damage; those who linger too long are frozen solid.
Her Ultimate ability is no doubt super effective but use it wisely and avoid wasting it on only a couple of enemies. Make sure you are facing a group and Mei is close to her allies before you blast away.
Mei Ultimate will damage enemies and slow them down, this will allow Mei and her allies to target them easily. Endothermic Blaster is a unique weapon that sometimes feel overpowered due its ability to slow enemies down for 2 seconds with continuous damage before freezing them solid for 1.5 second.
There is nothing Mei’s enemies can do to avoid these attacks.
Once your target is frozen you should start using the Icicles, which is the alternative fire for your primary weapon. The Ice Wall is a very effective tool when your enemies are waiting outside the Cryo Freeze to take you down.
Mei Counters and Match-Ups
Mei is a defensive short range character that can not effectively deal with the likes of Soldier 76, Pharah and others. However, her Cyro Freeze ability has many other uses as well. It can help her protect herself from Pharah, Genji’s Dragon Blade.
The same ability can help remove Zenyatta’s Orb of Discord. D.Va is a character that can prove to be a headache for Mei as she is able to fire countless rounds at close range without having to reload.
Meanwhile, Mei can use frost stream for 10 seconds before a reload is needed so D.Va is a pain. Some hero abilities are unaffected by the slowdown effect such as Tracer’s Blink, Genji’s Swift Strike, Reinhardt’s Charge, Pharah’s Jet Packs, Mercy’s Guardian Angel, and Winston’s Leap.
But her Ice Wall can protect her against such attacks.
How to Play Mei: Tips and Strategies
Keep in mind that Mei’s freeze gun does not penetrate through shields or barriers, so do not waste your time shooting at such objects. While facing Reinhardt’s shield, which he can shoot through, generate ice wall to block him off while your friends deal with the enemies who are not protected by his shield.
The Cryo-Freeze doesn’t only heal her but she is completely invulnerable while using it. There is nothing that can penetrate through; so it is also a shield for allies standing behind it.
Cyro Freeze has a 12 second cooldown which starts immediately after you’re done using it. Its duration is 4 seconds but if you heal up before it’s over, it’s best to cancel the remaining time period to instantly start the cooldown.
Hit the alternate fire button to cancel.
Using the Ice wall can be very effective if you allow some of the attackers to come out before blocking all others. This allows your team to take the rest down before focusing all gun fire on the ones stuck behind the ice wall.
D.Va can use her Defense Matrix to counter Mei’s Ultimate so it is best to use Mei’s Ultimate while you’re not directly engaged with D.Va.
