While Mojang has remained relatively quiet after the smash hit that Minecraft turned into (and remains), that’s not to say that they’ve been quiet on the gaming front, even though Notch sold Mojang to Microsoft. Just today, on the official Mojang website, there is news of a new free Mojang game, called Crown and Council.
Made by Henrikk Pettersson, also known as “carnalizer,” Crown and Council is a fast-paced strategy game where you take control of a kingdom and do your best to conquer the lands around you and obliterate the other monarchs that oppose you.
You do this by sending men to invade rival lands, and use defensive forts, naval attacks, and universities to attack and study in order to gain the advantage over your enemies.
The game provides a multitude of strategies to go about this as well:
It’s simple to play, but not quite so easy to win: do you spend all your cash on universities, hoping to survive long enough that your book-learnin’ makes you unstoppable in the late game? Or do yo go for a quick land-grab, hoping to put enough boots on the ground to give you an irreversible early advantage?
Other features included in the game are “fabulously mustachioed pixel-art tyrants,” along with procedurally generated land and even insults for your monarch to deliver to others.
Crown and Council is available right now on Steam for free, though it’s exclusive to Microsoft Windows computers. Sorry to all of you that use Mac and Linux, but you’re going to have to sit this one out.
Whether the game remains free on Steam and whether it makes a jump to mobile like Minecraft did remains to be seen, but hopefully Pettersson’s work doesn’t go to waste and people enjoy it. So what are you all waiting for? Log on to Steam and get playing! It’s not like you’ll be wasting money!
