Hardware maker AMD provided chips for our current gen consoles and will do the same for three new upcoming consoles. AMD “design wins” for its Semi-Custom processor design business were discussed, possibly confirming the existence of three new consoles coming this year and the next.
AMD CEO Lisa Su didn’t give any details during an investor’s call, however, Su did say that not all of these products will release this year.
I don’t believe that we’ve gone through any detail about what those wins are, so I would prefer to let that come out as our customers are ready to launch.
In addition [to the new design wins] we have our current game console business as well. So when you look at the aggregate of that, we do expect to start ramping that new business in the second half of the year. But we also expect the seasonal uplift of our traditional game console business. So that’s adding to what we expect will be a strong year for Semi-Custom overall
These three consoles are likely to be PS4K, Nintendo NX and Xbox One slim. PS4K and Xbox One have been rumored for a while now and the amount of details available online from credible sources pretty much confirm their arrival this year. If Microsoft is planning a slimmer version of its existing machine than we think the company should have no problems releasing it this year, although we do think PSK4 and NX may not make it in 2016.
One of the chips will be used on PS4K which is believed to be Jaguar-based x86 CPU. We are also expecting to see a 2.3x more capable Graphics solution for PS4K.
