Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition is currently hard at work developing the game using Unreal Engine 4. This is their first Unreal Engine 4 game and first Gears game after acquiring the licensing from Epic.
Unreal Engine 4 is a proprietary engine of Epic and is one of the most powerful development tools in the gaming industry. Sadly, we are yet to see the true power of it in a AAA game. But Gears of War 4 will change that. Epic itself is developing Paragon on Unreal Engine 4 which is looking amazing as well.
The Coalition will be making full use of Unreal Engine 4 features and will truly highlight its capabilities, just like previous games did with UE4 predecessor. According to creative director Chuck Osieja they have been working with Unreal Engine 4 before they acquired Gears of War 4.
The only people who have more experience with Unreal Engine 4 than us is Epic. We were using it a year before we started working on Gears 4. Even before we acquired the Gears license we had a really good relationship with Epic, which continues on to this day. We’ve been able to put stuff into the engine that they’ve been able to use; they’ve been able to build stuff for us. I think that Unreal Engine 4 was a really great decision for us.
Unreal Engine 4 really helps boost visuals in singleplayer campaign and provide a cinematic experience. However, due to devs targeting 60FPS on its multiplayer hardware limitations of Xbox One required them to cut a few noticeable corners.
Gears of War 4 releases on October 11 for Xbox One.
