PlayStation 4 released back in 2013 and now we are hearing rumors of a PlayStation 4K aka PS4K aka PS4.5. However, an upgraded version of PS4 is a different matter but what about PlayStation 5? Will there or will there not be a PlayStation 5?
Normally we would ask when will the next console cycle begins but in this case, we should be asking IF there will be another console cycle. Sony Worldwide Studio President Shuhei Yoshida was asked; “What does the PlayStation 5 look like?’ he said, ‘You mean if, ‘Yeah, it’s an if.’
This happened back in February 2015 at DICE Awards when Lorne Lanning spoke with Yoshida. Lanning said during the GameInformer Podcast:
It was a really interesting thing; he didn’t give me a clear answer, but he’s hinting at, ‘We need to be more agile, none of us know what the future really looks like so how do we adapt to it faster?’To me, that’s the way he was sort of thinking about it, which I think is the right way think about it.
PlayStation 4K might actually happen if Yoshida’s comments are any indication. It looks like the console cycles are going shrink and existing hardware is going to be upgraded like PC. It makes sense because the advancements in technology are so rapid that you can not expect a console to keep pushing decent experiences for 6-7 years.
Ex Bioware dev thinks PS4K is lunacy while Colin Minority has sources telling him that devs aren’t happy with PS4K. We also know that if screws it up, it may directly put Xbox One in the driving seat.
E3 2016 should bring news and we may finally know what the future looks like for the console market.
