A visual designer at Xbox has included a new console on his LinkedIn profile by the name of ‘Xbox NeXt’.
The designer, who remains anonymous, has been working with Xbox since 2008 having started with Microsoft in 2006. Whether this is the official name of the new console or just a working title is yet to be seen, but it does add fuel to the rumors that an upgraded version of the Xbox One is on its way. Or better yet, a brand new console.
Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, recently debunked rumors of an upgraded Xbox One, meaning that ‘Xbox NeXt’ would refer to a brand new console if this potential news is to surface as a reality.
Referring to the project as ‘Xbox One and a Half’, Spencer wants to make sure we all fully aware that the next console from Microsoft will be a brand new system:
“I’m not a big fan of Xbox One and a half. If we’re going to move forward, I want to move forward in big numbers” He explains, “I don’t know anything about any of the [PS4K] rumors that are out there, but I can understand other teams’ motivations to do that. For us, our box is doing well. It performs, it’s reliable, the servers are doing well. If we’re going to go forward with anything, like I said, I want it to be a really substantial change for people – an upgrade.”
With the new Sony and Nintendo consoles possibly arriving later this year, Microsoft may be left behind if they leave their project too long. On the other hand if they are looking to release a brand new console then doing so during the downtime of their rivals would provide a huge upper-hand in sales and future sales of their software. This year may become very exciting as the months roll by.
