ARK: Survival Evolved is a a survival action-adventure game that will be releasing later this year for Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC, and is currently available through Steam’s Early Access Program. You may or may not have heard about ARK: Survival Evolved Pooping Ability, but that’s real.
This ‘ability’ isn’t even something you can always control (just like real life, for some of us) and was seemingly added to the game for a cheap laugh and a marketable ruse to promote the game. However, it seems its inclusion wasn’t just for comedy, as the Studio Wildcard co-founder has recently revealed.
Speaking at GDC 2016 to Kotaku, Susan Stieglitz explained that the ‘proper’ reason for its inclusion was in fact as a suicide option. Getting trapped in a room or an area is a distinct possibility, so by answering nature’s call you can in fact kill yourself to enable a respawn.
“If you’re trapped in a room, [pooping] is the only conceivable biological function you could kill yourself with. Originally, we were debating putting in a suicide key to escape situations like that. Pooping is obviously pretty funny, and it had some marketing value, but it actually emerged as a solution to the idea of a suicide hot key — of instant death that would just feel cheap.”
The action of pooping yourself isn’t the method in which you commit suicide, but by eating your own faeces you will cause damage to yourself that eventually will cause your demise. On top of this you can actually use your own waste, and that of the creatures around you for a bunch of useful actions such as crafting.
Pooping yourself made the cut to the final game, however the developers have revealed that only two-thirds of the planned features will reach the full release.
Wildcard Studio have also recently released Ark: Survival of the Fittest for free, which is a standalone multiplayer experience in the same universe as Ark: Survival Evolved.
