Gears of War 4 will continue the saga of the Fenix family, as revealed in Game Informer magazine. Gears of War 4 will take place 25 years after Gears of War 3, where the Locust War that ravaged the world of Sera.
JD Fenix will also be voiced by former “Spartacus” actor Liam McIntyre, who played the titular character after its first season. He will be in the game alongside new characters such as Kait Diaz (played by Laura Bailey) and ex-Gear Delmont “Del” Walker. There’s been no word if Marcus Fenix or the rest of Delta Squad will make an appearance.
JD would appear to be Marcus’s son in more ways than one, as well; though he joined the Gears like his father, discipline problems forced him to go AWOL.
However, just because the Locust Horde is gone doesn’t mean that Sera is all hunky-dory now. Gears of War 4’s E3 2015 preview showed JD and Kait fighting against monstrous creatures, while also having to take shelter from a giant windstorm.
These new windstorms are known as “windflares,” which came about due to all of the bombs and weapons of mass destruction unleashed during the war against the Locust. Gears of War players have already seen the reactions that this can have in the form of razor hail, which can shred anyone that gets caught in it.
Windflares, however, will be much worse; a mix of a hurricane and a volcano, there are four categories of windflares which go from a powerful breeze to lightning strikes and even affecting your bullets.
Humanity is now an even more endangered species, back to hiding out in walled cities from the hostile environment and the new evil faction, known as the Swarm. Outsiders, the new form of Stranded, also have scattered camps around the landscape.
No one knows where the Swarm came from, but there is speculation that they evolved from the Locust, where so many of them died from Adam Fenix’s weapon that there were too many to bury, and so they were tossed into mass graves.
Developer The Coalition has ensured that Gears of War 4 will be a return to the first Gears of War game, where the atmosphere is not only closer and more ominous, but also more self-contained.
Unlike the epic, sprawling stories of Gears of War 2 and 3, Gears of War 4 will take place in a similar way to Gears of War 1, over a span of 24 hours with just JD and his two companions.
