According to Psyonix, the number of players in Rocket League will continue to be 4 vs. 4 until the developers add larger stadiums.
The game is scheduled to launch on Xbox One this week, but will not see an increase an increase in the number of players. Speaking of the issue, the developer Psyonix said that increasing the player count in current stadiums will render the game a tad ‘too crazy’.
While speaking with Microsoft’s Major Nelson; Psyonix’s Jeremy Dunham said that the studio will consider the idea of 4 vs. 4 if it ever thought about introducing larger stadiums:
We experimented with larger player counts but it’s too crazy. Maybe one day we’ll revisit it if we ever decide to go with bigger stadiums. But for now, more than 4v4 we think takes a little bit away from the enjoyment of the game; it gets a little too crazy.
Rocket League, as of now, supports 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, and an unfair mode which pits a single player against as much as 4 players at the same time.
