If you are a fan of retro gaming then this latest Atari promotion may interest you. The only thing you’ll have to put up with is the fact that it tries to push you into using Microsoft’s Edge browser.
If you visit Atari’s Arcade you can now play a remade browser version of classic games, including:
- Missile Command
- Lunar Lander
- Yar’s Revenge
- Super Breakout
While it does state that these are to be played though the Edge browser, they will work in others such as Firefox or Chrome. The only drawback to using these is the fact that advertisements will pop up. If you use Edge then these ads will be removed.
Putting up with the adverts doesn’t hinder the enjoyment of having a blast from the past with the likes of Centipede. For the purists though it is fair to say that they won’t be happy with the updated graphics.
Thankfully the controls are easy to use, so if you want to get down to the important side of the games and actually play them then they are fun. I’m not sure how successful this promotion will be in getting people to use the Edge browser though, I’m sure most users will have decided if they will ever use this browser or not.
It will be interesting to see how people take these Atari arcade games, and if they enjoy them in the spirit in which they have been created. A celebration of the 40th anniversary of Atari, this is more about the games than any money making attempt to cash in on the retro gaming movement.
