2K has announced that competitive gaming is coming to NBA 2K16 with NBA 2K16: Road to the Finals.
Road to the Finals essentially combines the simulation basketball with eSports which will conclude during the NBA Finals in June. Players on both Playstation 4 and Xbox One can participate in a number of in-game events to qualify for the tournament and get a chance to win $250,000. Speaking of this, VP of Marketing for NBA 2K Alfie Brody said:
As the world of competitive gaming continues to evolve, NBA 2K is a natural fit to join the growing landscape. Our series has long inspired rivalry among gamers, and we’re looking forward to encouraging our fans to enjoy the thrill of competition on a larger scale.
Road to the Finals is scheduled to tip off on Feb. 15, 2016 in North America which will continue through May. 8. Players will be able to participate in any of the 16 qualifying events where they will need to win at least 4 games in order to qualify. On 21st May, the 16 winners both on Playstation 4 and Xbox One will face each other off in a single-elimination tournament. The console winners will then face each other for $250,000 alongside NBA Finals.
According to President of Visual Concept Greg Thomas, Road to the Finals is only the first step and the development team is looking forward to add more excitement and competitive action to the franchise:
The NBA 2K development team has aspired to join the exciting world of eSports for years. Road to the Finals is our first step and we can’t wait to add even more excitement and competitive action to our franchise.
NBA 2K16 is now available on Playstation 4, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, iOS, and Android-based devices.
