While many news reports focus on how well games sold, a new report has looked at how well games have done in a media sense. This is related to the amount of focus a game has had on it from the press.

This is according to a blog on Gamasutra that reveals the numbers after they have been analysed and critiqued. This report also looked at how well the platforms did.

Looking at the top games it probably comes as no surprise that the following was found:

  • The Witcher 3 came out on top with a total of 51,098 articles written about it.
  • Fallout 4 came a close second with 50,144
  • Grand Theft Auto V continued to do well with a total of 49,002 articles.
  • With all the drama around Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain it is somewhat surprising that it was way down in 8th position.

These values were based on PR monitoring by IcoPartners where the graph below was sourced from.

When it comes to platforms it should be no surprise that PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation brand dominated, but Xbox (both brand and platform) didn’t do too badly.

“The PlayStation brand is having a very strong lead over Xbox, with 66% more articles taken over the whole period. The brand not only has more usage (PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation VR) but also leads across products in a similar generation, with PlayStation 4 for instance having 35% more mentions in the media than the Xbox One.”

It’s well worth taking a look at the article as a whole as it makes for interesting reading.
