Shenmue 3 PayPal Rewards Aren’t Canceled, Publications Wrongly Reported the Scenario
Over the past couple of days, Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter campaign has been the topic of hot debate around the digital realms. Fans were seen cursing and raging over the fact that Shenmue 3 PayPal backers aren’t’ getting the promised rewards.
We also covered the story for you like many other publications.
Shenmue developers held a poll on Kickstarter to decide whether or not Kickstarter exclusive rewards should be offered to PayPal backers. 4,670 of the respondents said, “Yes, please make the Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards available on PayPal.” 4,009 respondents on the other hand were against it, “No, Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards are for Kickstarter only.”
The remaining 6,432 answered, “Either is fine with me.”
In the end it was decided that Kickstarter exclusive rewards aren’t going to be handed out to PayPal backers. Here’s an excerpt from the official announcement:
Considering the strong response from those of you who felt that the Exclusive Rewards should remain exclusive for the Kickstarter, those Exclusive Rewards will not be made available on the PayPal page as originally promised.
Thank you all for your participation. We hope everyone will continue to let their voices be heard as we go forward with the project.
GOD knows we can’t stop the internet from raging over such matters, but fans were seen ragging over something that is completely inaccurate.
Here’s what happened..
After the news broke, many in the race of reporting it first forgot to make things clear for the readers, or mistakenly read the announcement wrong in a hurry. Some renowned publications reported that PayPal backers aren’t getting anything at all, not even a copy Shenmue 3.
Obviously, fans started asking developers for their money back, which is completely understandable. Due to news outlets wrongly reporting the whole scenario, fans believed that they aren’t getting any rewards at all on PayPal. In one of the articles it was mentioned that “the PayPal backers were initially promised access to this stuff — like a physical copy of the game for PlayStation 4.”
Actually, PaPal backers are getting rewards according to the tier they paid for. But, they aren’t getting Kickstarter Exclusive rewards as they would remain exclusive to Kickstarter backers.
Media is partly to blame here but you can’t ignore the fact that Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter campaign has been very confusing. Changing stances, broken promises, and not much communication with the media does lead to such situations.
I do believe that Ys Net isn’t doing a very good job marketing Shenmue 3, or keeping in touch with the press. Some renowned publications wrongly reported this news and millions of fans read it. However, not a single statement has been shared by Ys to clear a situation that is causing negative publicity.
With that said, we are in no way defending the fact that some members of our community made a mistake, and we apologize on their behalf. We ourselves have made plenty of dumb mistakes, but it happens.
Anyways, we did our best to clear any confusion regarding Kickstarter Exclusive and PayPal rewards. You can visit the official Website for more details regarding the game and its campaign.
