The Xbox exclusivity of Rise of the Tomb Raider is never something that I was a fan of, especially the length of time it would take to release on PlayStation 4. A new rumour may explain why this period was so long.
While at first the post on Neogaf does have a feel of being a conspiracy theory it does appear that the “sources” that have provided the information are trusted. What we can take from this is still debatable though.
What this “source” appears to suggest is that there originally would have been an exclusivity for the Xbox that lasted 4-6 months, but Square Enix were enticed to extend this to a whole year. This was to protect the release of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
The problem I have with this rumour is that it seems like a really stupid move to make for Square Enix, even if it would work in Naughty Dog’s favour. Another issue is, why extend it to a whole year when it could have been released a month or too later at most? In ways the facts just don’t add up.
That is my opinion though, and there may be some truth behind this rumour. This would explain in some ways why the PC release doesn’t last as long as the PlayStation 4 version, but again there seems to be a contradiction here too.
We’ll have to see if there are any facts about this revealed, though even if it was true I doubt there will be. This is probably one of those stories that will remain a conspiracy until the truth is revealed.
What are your thoughts on this story, would Square Enix really delay Rise of the Tomb Raider for a year on the PlayStation 4 to avoid Uncharted 4’s release? Let us know your opinion below.
