The end of 2015 is almost here, and as we look at 2016 it could very well be an even bigger year for the current generation consoles. Even with this success though, thoughts are on what the big console makers will do next.
In a recent interview with The Verge Phil Spencer made it clear that there will be another console from Microsoft in the future:
“No,” Spencer says, “I fully expect that you’ll see another console from us […] Our best customers are Xbox console customers, and I want to keep those people engaged both on the Xbox One and anything we might do in the future. I’m 100 percent committed to that.”
“I don’t want to dilute what the Xbox console customer feels,” says Spencer. “I want to expand what we’re able to do for more customers.”
While this may seem like a strange comment to say, when the continuation of the Xbox has never been in doubt, this is taken in context as to how the games industry is changing. As more devices allow us to play games, obviously there is the possibility that consoles become less important.
Just when a new console will be revealed though is questionable. With the sales of current generation console growing people won’t want another upgrade anytime soon and both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are relatively young. Both Sony and Microsoft will want to get as many years out of their consoles as possible.
With Xbox One unlikely to ever beat PlayStation 4 in this current generation though and the fast pace that technology is moving there will always be that urge to look to the future. We’ll no doubt have a few years until that finally arrives though.
