Report: PS2 Titles Will Be Digital Only on PS4, Discs Aren’t Compatible

PlayStation 4 will soon get PS2 emulation, meaning plenty of PS2 titles are coming our way. However, PS2 discs won't be compatible with PS4.

Just now we posted an article regarding Dark Cloud 3, and how it may possibly be in development. Based on an image, we speculated that Level-5 is working on Dark Cloud 3 and may announce it on PSX along with the original games for PS2 emulation feature on PS4.

Here’s the images we used:

If you take a look at the last few lines of the text in above image, you’ll a very interesting piece of information.

“PS2 Classics and PS2 Formatted Discs are incompatible with PS4.”

This basically means that if you have any PlayStation 2 games on disc, they won’t work with Sony’s PlayStation 4. It is clear that Sony will distribute PS2 games via PlayStation Network. It isn’t a surprise because there is a different between emulation and backwards compatibility.

However, how exactly will Sony handle the entire PS2 emulation model? What if I already own the game, will I be charged?

My guess is that Sony will not charge you for games you own on discs, but the disc will need to be put into PS2 before you can play your digital download. It is probably the best way to handle such a feature, and it is likely to happen.

PSX will surely bring more news regarding this, so stay-tuned for updates. Till then, feel free to let us know what you think in the comments below.
