Level-5’s Yo-Kai Watch recently made its way to the West, already a success it had eyes on increasing its fanbase. Today it was revealed that they have shipped over 10 million units worldwide.
Reported on GameSutra this is a sign that Level-5 have high hopes for the game. The figures were based on sales not only physical but also digital on the Nintendo 3DS.
This is impressive for a game that has only recently made its way to the North America. What it may show though is that there were plenty of fans waiting for the Pokemon like game to finally get an international release like this.
Taking inspiration from Pokemon is not a bad thing, especially if done right. In fact, it appears Level-5 have not only been inspired by the Nintendo game, but have also managed to best it. This happened in Japan in 2014 when it became the countries best-selling game.
In a recent interview about Yo-Kai Watch, Level-5 Chief Executive Officer Akihiro Hino revealed the company’s plans in moving it to the West:
“Yo-Kai Watch was a big hit in Japan, and it’s finally coming to America and Europe. We definitely want it to be successful there. It was a big project, with lots of people involved. I’m very anxious to see how it’ll be received by audiences here.”
On what the game will bring to Western audiences, he said:
“The main thing about the game is the Yo-Kai. Each one has a distinct personality. They have their own backgrounds and stories, a story about how they got to this point. They’re not like animals or pets. They’re more like humans, every one of them, and they have their own human drama. I hope everyone here will be able to enjoy the human drama each Yo-Kai brings.”
So based on the figures revealed, Yo-Kai Watch may be the success that the company are looking for. We’ll have to wait and see how well the sales do.
