Treyarch Reveal Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Modding & Mapping Details
With the high profile release of some games for the PC it is almost always expected now that there will be some modding available to the user. Today Treyarch revealed their plans for allowing purchasers of the game to apply their own updates.
In the announcement they revealed that their current plan is:
- You will be able to create Maps & Game Modes and more!
- We will include Unranked Dedicated Server Files with the tools so you can run servers with modded content anywhere you choose.
- We will provide an Unranked Server Browser so you can easily find and join servers with modded content.
- Closed Alpha target date: March 2016
They also noted though:
“Please remember that this is software development, so things don’t always work out exactly as planned. Sometimes features slip or drop off altogether, sometimes they get replaced with other, more awesome features as we hit into limitations of our original plans.”
With the release of an alpha version of the modding tools to be aimed for March 2016, the process to allow modding will take some time. We don’t have any date for beta testing yet, but I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about it in 2016.
Aiming the release of the tools for sometime in 2016, this gives Treyarch the chance to make sure the game and the multiplayer elements are stable before letting the modders add potentially gamebreaking updates. While these won’t be available in the main matches of course, the last thing players want is for the unranked servers (that allow mods) to go down because of bugs.
With confirmation that Treyarch are planning on allowing modding of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 it will be interesting to see what mod developers will bring to the game.
