Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita to lose Facebook Support

Sony have announced they are removing support from Playstation 3, Playstation Vita, and Playstation TV for Facebook functionality by January 2016.

If you use Facebook on Playstation 3, Playstation Vita, or Playstation TV today’s news from Sony may interest you. From January 2016 they will be ending support on these devices for Facebook.

This was revealed in a statement made on the Sony Support Site. In the update they state:

In January 2016* Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will terminate support for the Facebook features integrated within the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita systems, as well as the Facebook applications for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV.  In anticipation of this change, the Facebook applications will no longer be available for download from PlayStation®Store as of 15 September, 2015.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate your understanding.

*The schedule may change depending on circumstances.

While many people, particularly those who use Playstation 4, may not be bothered by this update I’m sure users of the consoles affected might be. I’m sure in this age of technology when we have so many devices that can connect to Facebook, losing these few won’t really impact us that much.

What this announcement does raise though is exactly why this support is being removed? With Sony claiming that the Playstation 3 will still be supported why would they remove something as simple as a Facebook App?

While we do have to accept that previous generation console will slowly lose support for services that it uses, this still does seem like a weird move by Sony. Could 2016 finally be the year that they look to kill of the Playstation 3?
