A new report circulating the internet is laying some very serious allegations not only on the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning developer 38 Studios but also on the government.
The report alleges that the deal which brought the MMO developing studio to Rhode Island – and provided state guaranteed loans of $75 million – was actually prepped under the table and behind closed doors before being made public.
Serious allegations of involvement on the part of former House Speaker Gordon Fox, studio founder and Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling, and an unnamed member of board of directors at 38 Studios have been levied.
It is being claimed that Gordon Fox met with the aforementioned without the knowledge of Donald Carcieri (who was the Governor back then) and ordered the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation for the loan guarantee and to complete the deal although at that time there was no such legislation that allowed such a step by law.
Interestingly, some court documents are being cited as the source of all these details – the documents were presented during an ongoing lawsuit against 38 Studios.
It should be noted that Fox is currently serving prison sentences on the charges of bribery, fraudulent tax returns and wire fraud.
The general assembly at Rhode Island has dismissed the motion for an independent investigation into the matter.
At this point, it is important for the gaming industry to consider which way they want to take us in the future; shady deals like these which come at the loss of the public are certainly not the way I have in mind for the future of gaming industry.
