It is not often that a game trailer manages to send chills down your spine, but this one may just do that. Directed by Hideo Kojima and perhaps released at the perfect time to finally blow fans minds, this trailer for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain could be one of the best trailers for a video game ever made.
Now comes the warning, although I’ve not played the game yet and can’t confirm it, there do appear to be spoilers in the trailer. This may be the one time that I advise fans of Metal Gear Solid to look past the and watch the trailer, it is worth it. This is Kojima’s love letter to the phenomenon that he has created, and a thank you to his fans.
While I’ve played a few of the Metal Gear Solid games, I wouldn’t describe myself as a “fan boy,” but I have my pre-order in place. If I’d not already done this as a chance to play through Ground Zeroes, watching this trailer would have had me handing over my money right now.
One thing that I did notice that is interesting is the fact that Metal Gear Solid 5 is fighting through the controversy surrounding Konami. With this trailer, we don’t think “this is the best game Konami has ever released” we are more in awe of the craftsmanship of Kojima and for Konami to have lost him? That makes them the biggest fools in the gaming industry.
So watch this trailer at your own risk in the knowledge that spoilers may be present, but also enjoy it for what it is. With Kojima promising that he will continue to be creative for the rest of his life, we may not get to see the likes of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain again, but the fact that it has been made is the most truly impressive thing.
