Alternative Gamescom 2015 Rise of the Tomb Raider Demonstration Featuring a Stealthy Approach

For those who prefer stealth, here is an alternative version of the Gamescom 2015 Rise of the Tomb Raider where Lara takes an alternative approach.

When we watched the Xbox presentation at Gamescom 2015, Rise of the Tomb Raider was shown. The game demonstration showed Lara at her most violent, making her way past enemy troops on high alert.

One thing that Crystal Dynamics have made clear though is that there are different approaches to getting through problematic situations like that. With some gamers asking for a look at some stealth gameplay a new video has been released to show how the same situation can be handled without taking any lives at all, and without Lara being seen.

What we see in the demonstration is an approach that we’ve seen in many other games that prefer stealth as a means of getting to a destination. Lara makes use of bottles and other items to distract opponents without being seen. It’s interesting that arrows can be used to the same effect, yet this doesn’t raise an alarm.

Another thing that caught my interest, though we’ve probably seen it before, is the extension to Lara’s pickaxe. Now we see added rope that can be used to give the tool more of a dynamic use, allowing Lara to swing to greater distances, or to grab ledges that may be out of reach. As proven in this demonstration it becomes very useful for Lara when finding alternative routes to make her way through the levels.

Typical of a stealthy approach, and the lack of combat, we see a greater challenge for Lara in this level. It seemed easier for her to take a few lives and get to her destination quicker. I’m sure there will be achievements awarded for taking a more cautious approach though, and there will be players who see this as a challenge, to complete the game without taking any lives. However, we’ll have to see if this is really possible.
