Since its release back in November 2013, the PlayStation 4 has become the fastest selling console in history. It managed to beat rival Xbox One almost every month since hitting shelves, meanwhile, Wii U isn’t considered a competition for PlayStation nor Xbox at this point.
Sony’s dominance across the globe continues as new sales data from VGchartz reveal PS4’s massive lead over Xbox One and Wii U. According to new global lifetime sales:
- PlayStation 4: 23,217,798
- Xbox One: 12,835,320
- Wii U: 9,727,909
Note: These figures aren’t from an official source and VGChartz isn’t the most reliable of sources, so take these numbers lighty.
In the month of May, PS4 was once again the leading platform.
- PlayStation 4: 617,578
- Xbox One: 272,955
- Wii U: 141,426
The PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One and Wii U by 344,623 and 476,152 units respectively. Year-over-year monthly sales are up for PS4 and Xbox One, but for Wii U sales have gone down.
The Wii U came out back in 2012 but has failed to build upon the success of the Wii. Nintendo is now working on a new console called the NX that was previously believed to be a replacement for both 3DS and Wii U. However, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata assured fans that the company will not be dropping support for both of these platforms anytime soon.
As for Xbox One, it has come a long way and still has a lot of distance to cover before taking the lead this generation. Comparatively, Microsoft had a better E3 show then Sony and announced quite a few notable games and features for its console.
But whether or not that translates into sales remains to be seen.
