Developer Carbine Studios has today confirmed that the rumors of past weeks are indeed true and WildStar will be going free-to-play this year.
While an exact date for the switch is going to be revealed later, the developer has confirmed that the game will be transitioning into the new model this autumn. The news is hardly surprising seeing how the sci-fi MMORPG has been struggling to bolster its user base since its launch in June last year.
Players will be able to access the entire game for free, including all dungeons, raids, adventures, shiphand missions, and PvP modes. Creative Director Chad Moore and Mike Donatelli have stressed that there will be no hidden restrictions and that players are promised with the complete experience.
There, however, will also be a Premium option available which is called the “Signature Membership.” The monthly subscription entitles players to bonuses to XP, crafting, currency and item drops. These rewards are still being finalized and may be improved with time. There are also various other differences such as being able to create a Guild or WarParty.
WildStar will also get an in-game store that will sell convenience and cosmetic items. According to Carbine Studios, almost every in-game store item will have an equivalent for those players that “want to invest time rather than money.”
Previous subscribers to the game who will remain as such until the transition to free-to-play, will get a bundle of loyalty rewards. This includes an exclusive Ikthian Crawler mount, an exclusive DJ Caretaker housing décor item, a Disco Snoglug companion pet, a new housing music track, four months of Signature service, and two new titles: “Living Legend” and “Nexus Loyalist”. These will be unlocked on the first day of transition.
The developer also mentioned that it would be bringing major re-balances to the game in time for the free-to-play switch. More details on this will be provided soon.
