News like this, at a time like now is not usually expected. This is because if a console maker is planning on launching a new controller for the console, they would rather share the news at E3 2015 which is just a little over two weeks from now.
Regardless of all that, Microsoft has updated the Xbox One Wireless Controller support page on their official website and included a bit of new details that all but confirm that a new controller is incoming very soon.
The only change made to it was the addition of a single sentence detailing a new point on the controller which is not there on the current models.
Apparently, there will be a 3.5-mm port on the base of the Xbox One controllers that are to be released after next month. The new audio jack will let you plug in “compatible” headphones. Here’s what the page reads now:
3.5-mm port. Used to connect compatible 3.5-mm audio devices. Only available on controllers released after June 2015.
This has numerous implications; firstly, is apparently being open to non-proprietary headphones which is new. Secondly, if this is all that the new controller is going to bring then Microsoft might be skipping the much wanted move away from depending on Play and Charge kit for charging of the controllers.
Do keep in mind that we are not sure about this one yet, hopefully E3 2015 will bring official word on everything that is being changed.
Lastly, it obviously means that soon after June 2015 (July?) we will have a newer model of Xbox One controller in our hands.
