Tychus J. Findlay, a popular character from the Starcraft series, is most of the time seen with a cigar between his lips. The character is making an appearance in Heroes of the Storm and strangely, his famous cigar is missing from the action.
Fans found it odd and believed the cigar to be a major part of his personality so it shouldn’t be removed. Blizzard has now come-out to offer us an explanation as why this is the case. They revealed that productivity is to blame for the missins cigar. Blizzard senior artist Phill Gonzales said:
There are a magnitude of guidelines we have to be aware of. From a development standpoint we prioritise making Heroes and Skins as utilitarian as possible, if a single model can be used in all regions, that’s a huge win for development
He further added:
Making two versions means more data management, multiple duplicates of the asset (if we update an animation, it has to propagate to all versions) such as the the death ragdoll model, the facial animations, his morph into the Odin, and apply that process to every skin as well. This mountain of work affects multiple departments and has to be addressed every time we’d adjust Tychus
It makes sense, as adding the cigar would have created a mess of extra workload for developers. Gonzales says some other parts of the game are also adjusted in accordance with regional guidelines.
Heroes of the Storm is in an open-beta but is planned for a public release soon on PC.
