Since GTA V was released on current-gen consoles and was soon expected for PC, I had no doubts that the sales will go past 50 million units.
Publisher Take-Two revealed its financials earlier, which confirmed that GTA V sales have indeed gone past 50 million now. That’s a massive achievement, one that only GTA 6 may possibly be able to go past.
According to the details, GTA V has sold 52 million units around the world since release. In this quarter alone, the game managed to push 7 million units, I repeat, 7 million copies were sold. The company said that strong PC sales helped them reach this mark.
Moreover, in just about a month this game has managed to sell 2.3 million units on Steam. It’s hard to believe that a game released back in 2013, is still the most fierce competitor for newly released AAA titles.
Fiscal 2016 is off to a great start, highlighted by the April launch of Grand Theft Auto V for the PC, which has exceeded our expectations.
The company is also enjoying impressive in-game sales in GTA Online. The revenue went-up 66% to $202.5 million, compared to the same period of last year. In-game purchases represent 47% of the company’s earnings this quarter.
GTA V is now available across all major platforms, except the Wii U. From the looks of it, there is no stopping to GTA V’s popularity or growth in revenue.
One can only imagine what the next GTA will do in terms of success. However, I don’t think we will see a new game anytime soon.
